Article: Dream. Work. Live. Inspire.

Dream. Work. Live. Inspire.

Dream. Work. Live. Inspire.

In class a few months ago I learned about discourse. I think it's the word that describes a lot of stuff motivational speakers are always yelling about. Basically, discourse is the formalized way of thinking, knowing and being that is recognized as legitimate truth. It can be something like gender roles, that seem so rigid but are really only as applicable as we make them. It could be argumentative discourse telling you that college and a nine to five job will bring you happiness (ps: this isn't true). Either way, these things are made out to be unwritten rules in society, so it comes pretty natural to us to abide.

But what happens when we don't?

If you think about it, the only definite things that will happen to you is your heartbeat will start and one day it will stop. Everything else in between is up to you. Something I've learned from being a people-pleaser is it may feel wrong doing your own thing...If you've always followed a certain path, you believe it to be true and make others follow it too. But vulnerability always overcomes the challenges of limitation.

    Dream

“At least once a day, allow yourself the freedom to think and dream.” -Albert Einstein

My parents have always told me I’m a “dreamer”. I say where’s the fun in thinking realistically all the time? Now some obvious factors like money are important, but how different would your life be if you at least tried pursuing the things you think are impossible? Step out in courage to act with no limitations like failure.

    Work

“A goal without a plan is just a wish” -Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Now it’s time to put those dreams into action. Don’t wait for a certain age, qualification, time, season, there’s always something you can do now.

    Live

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist.” -Oscar Wilde

With all that’s going on, you’re forgetting life is happening. When I was younger, I’d always “save” things…I’m not sure for what. A special occasion? A more deserving moment? Anything from my Halloween candy to a fresh page of colourful stickers, it was all approached with weary hesitance, as I stored whatever goodies away for later. The funny thing is I always lost interest or grew out of whatever it was before I ever got to use it. Author Mary Engelbreit wrote “Don’t ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is the special occasion.” If you see or feel goodspeak it, and if something makes you happy — enjoy it.

    Inspire

“Find what makes you happy and use it to make other people happy” -Dallas Clayton

Now that you're living mindfully, and not just going through the motions think about how this can affect others around you. What are your skills, talents, strengths? How can you use them to help others, and change the world for the better? Being vulnerable is the best weapon against discourse.
